Experience. sparkles link graphic Logo graphic Layout 017 graphic Image 1 The Kinfolk (originally named The Adaptable Cabin ) was designed for families, but there is a longer story behind it. When I design, I prefer to design from the inside out. I'm not actually sure what the home will look like in the end. Some architects design with a vision , I like to think I design by experience . I ask myself, what will the experiences be within the space? , who lives here… what moments can be created in the space that will delight them? , and how will these spaces function in order to meet their needs? . Once pen hits paper, it becomes a discovery and a creative puzzle in one. For The Kinfolk, I knew I wanted the space to represent the needs of a growing family. The mission was to create a super affordable yet responsible build that still had personality. One way this was achieved was by structuring the design on a 24 x 24 grid. Everything from the framing, window size and placement, and layout align to the grid. This creates a low waste system for materials, which are typically sold in 24 segments equals low waste and money saved, win win! Experientially, the home is quite simple. Spacious open areas for gathering connect to outdoor decks. Bedrooms flank the public zones to create private nooks. Little moments of alignment within the design create spatial balance. graphic Layout 010 graphic Layout 017 We will keep you posted as we continue to put the pieces together to deliver high quality, thoughtful, and responsible building plans to you.
